'AB' means 'Water'. 'E' means 'Of'. 'SAFA' means 'PURITY'. 'AB-E-SHIFA' means 'WATER OF PURITY'.

Ab-e-Safa is also called 'NIYAZ', 'NOOR' and 'AMIRAS'. Ab-e-Safa is Holy Water blessed by Mowlana Hazar Imam. We take Ab-e-Shifa daily after morning prayer and in the evenings on Friday,Chandraat and other occasions.

The ceremony of Ab-e-Safa is called 'GHAT-PATJI KRIYA'.

The Holy Du'a which is recited in Hat-Patji Kriya is called 'GHAT-PATJI DU'A'. We must take Ab-e-Shifa with great respect and complete faith. We must take the 'piyali' (small cup) with our right hand and place it on the palm of our hand. We must first pray for all other Ismailis and then for ourselves. Then we must say 'FARMAN' and drink the Ab-e-Shifa from the piyali. The person pouring out Ab-e-Shifa will answer 'YA ALI, YA MUHAMMAD'.

As we take the Ab-e-Shifa we must be very careful not to spill it on the floor as it is Holy Water. The most important thing to remember is that we must take Ab-e-Shifa with complete faith.

Hazrat Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah (a.s.) has said in his Farman:  "It is only when you drink Niyaz with complete and true faith that your heart will be cleansed".

Whenever there is Niyaz, we must not forget to drink it.
