'Baiyat' means 'Oath of Allegiance'.
It is an oath which we give to Mowlana Hazar Imam.
The meaning of 'Baiyat' is explained by Hazrat Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah in his Farman, where he says:
"The meaning of 'Baiyat' which you perform before us is that you give us a promise that you will never do anything throughout your lives which is not in keeping with our Farmans, and we on our part promise you that just as you are with us now in this world, you will also be with us in the next world."
'Baiyat' is, therefore, a promise which we give to Mowlana Hazar Imam. If we keep the promise we shall earn the happiness of both the worlds, but if we (God forbid) break the promise we shall be the losers. The Holy Qur'an says:
"In-nal-lazeena yuba-yi-'unaka, in-name yuba-yi-'unallah; yadul -lahi fauga ai-deehim. Fa man-nakatha, fain-name yankuthu 'ala naisihi wa man aura bima 'aahada 'alaihullah, fasa yu'-teehi aj ran 'azeema." It means:
"(O Prophet!) Verily, those who give you their allegiance, they give it but to Allah (Himself); Allah's hand is upon their hands, then he who betrays it, he certainly betrays it against himself, and he who fulfils what he has pledged, Allah will reward him in plenty." (48:10)
From the above verse of the Holy Qur'an, we can see that those who break the 'baiyat' do harm to their own souls, whereas those who fulfill the 'baiyat' i.e. act according to the Holy Farmans of Hazar Imam, receive great rewards.
Obeying the Holy Farmans of Hazar Imam means living up to the 'baiyat' and acting against them means breaking the 'baiyat'. Mu'mins are very careful about what they do and how they act. They do not want to break the 'baiyat' and so they always keep in mind the Farmans of Hazar Imam and follow them sincerely.
